Qualifications for Apprenticeship

HOW DO I GET INTO THE APPRENTICESHIP?

Following are the basic requirements for entry into the Joint School of Carpentry’s (JSC) Apprenticeship Program.  Each one of these requirements must be met prior to admission.  Should you have any questions about these items please contact the JSC.  

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.  If you are under 18, you are required to present a work permit.
  1. Applicants must be physically able to perform the work of the trade and meet other entrance qualifications as shall be established by the JSC.
  1. Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must show proof of registration as an alien.
  1. At the request of the employer, the employer’s representative, or the Union’s representative, the JSC may require a medical examination during the probationary period of an Apprentice who shows evidence of a detrimental handicap or disability.
  1. Any misstatement, omission of material fact, or falsification of any statements or any application by an applicant may be sufficient cause for rejection of the application or dismissal of the applicant after indenture or employment.
  1. Proof of the completion of high school or a GED is required. Online diplomas are not acceptable.
  1. Applicants must pass a substance abuse screening.

Upon acceptance into the program new Apprentices must agree to the following:

  1. Read and sign the four-year Apprenticeship Agreement.
  2. Read and agree to the policies set forth in the JSC Student Handbook.
  3. The ability to travel to job sites as assigned within the jurisdiction of the JSC.
  4. Possession of the tools listed below upon arrival on the job site.
  • Leather nail pouch or carpenter's overalls
  • Work shoes with safety toe
  • Lock-type tool box (carpenter's – must hold 2’ level)
  • 20-28 oz. Hammer
  • 25' tape
  • Speed square or combination square
  • 2’ level
  • Chalk box
  • 10'' or 12” adjustable wrench
  • Utility knife
  • Hand saw
  • 6' or 8' standard and Phillips screwdrivers (or combination screwdriver)
  • Nail puller (cats paw)
  • Flat bar

The JSC admits Apprentices of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to Apprentices at the school.  The JSC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies and school-administered programs.
