Apprenticeship Program

A Four-Year Work and Training Experience

The carpentry Apprenticeship Program is a four-year program.  The four years consist of on-the-job training and school instruction.  The Apprentice attends school year-round, one week every three months, or one week per quarter.  The school schedule is broken into quarters (4 per year). Classes are held from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  There is no tuition.

While being trained as an Apprentice, you will become eligible for health benefits after accumulating the required number of work hours.  In addition, at a point in your apprenticeship, you will qualify for participation in the Carpenters’ Retirement Fund.  This program is VA approved and conforms to the Department of Labor regulations.

Our curriculum is divided into four areas of specialty.  Interior Systems includes framing for walls, floors and ceilings, drywall hanging and finishing, three piece door jambs and welded door frame installation and ceiling layout and installation.  Concrete Forming covers identifying different form components and their use, constructing wall and footing forms, supported beam and deck forms, tilt up wall forms, pre-cast panel forms, and forms for a variety of stairs and ramps.  Millwork Installation involves trim cutting and installation, door installation, milling and installation of assorted door hardware, solid surface counter top fabrication and maintenance.  Pile Driving includes general knowledge of pile driving, concrete and form work and pile installation of marine systems, foundation shoring and underpinning systems and heavy timber and steel construction.  Apprentices will learn how to weld, how to cut and burn metal, rigging, layout instruments and powder actuated tools.

Apprentices are paid on a varying scale based on a percentage of the Journeyman wage.  Each year an Apprentice successfully completes class room instruction hours and work hours the pay rate increases.  See the Apprenticeship Pay Rates for the current pay scale.
